Another easy way is to use a transparent fill pattern with thick white diagonal lines (and white edge) over the top of the view. Then the view can stay "live". The pattern lines create a dashed line effect.

OK I really like that one Richard. I wish I had thought of that. One thing I would like to add. You could have one of these filled boxes already present on ones layout template (I have a variety of stuff including a "white out" box) so you would not have to bother making it each time. Also in X1 you can have a dashed line for the foundation layer, the only thing you should have to do is add some short solid lines above grade.
